Kirtan

DESCRIPTION

Curious about Kirtan? Cultivate Community Kirtan is the place to start! Our kirtan is a casual gathering where we will chant, sing, and play music together (typically, but not always) in a call-and-response format. Cultivate Kirtan invites participants to bring a 'song to share' with the group that they will lead! While this is not required, you can simply come sing-a-long, learn and listen—this practice allows ALL to contribute to the group music.

What is Kirtan? Kirtan is a non-denominational, ancient Indian practice that originated in the bhakti movements as a devotional offering. It's a collective chanting or musical conversation that can include a variety of instruments, dance, audience participation and moral narration. Kirtan is different from mantra, which is often intended for personal use, while kirtan is about community.

Why Kirtan? Research shows that singing as a collective brings people closer together and makes them more connected. Kirtan can also help release stress, tension and anxiety. Some say that chanting as a group brings people together in a way that no other form of yoga does. We agree!

"Kirtan is the glue that bonds our hearts together." -David Newman
